Make Your Business Standout

One of the hardest things to figure out in any creative business is how to make your business standout. We spend so much time as creatives just trying to make our business standout. Between the inventory, client expectations, ordering,  and running day to day operations, it feels like there isn’t a lot of time to create things that make your business extraordinary. I have one thing to say to this,

MAKE THE TIME

because if you don’t, someone else will!

In this article we are going to show you our top ways that we make our business and our clients work stand out in a creative market.

Standout with an Authentic Website

Not having an authentic website is one of the biggest mistakes I see our clients make and the first thing you need to fix. So many business owners go to another site and say

“wow this is really pretty, I will copy that”

Then they go find the template and reproduce the website almost exactly like the original. You can’t stand out that way.  We recommend that you have a custom website designed or if you have to use a template, make it your own and change it to show the value you bring with your business.

Your Website is a Store Front

Think of your website as your store front.  It has to show your personality, value, and services offered to your clients. This is often the first impression they have of you. This impression has to stick out in their mind so much that they remember your site above all the others. If you would like a custom site done we recommend a great website designer like Joanna Moss and a hosting platform like ShowIt.

Standout With Unique Products

This sounds easy but very few business owners actually do it. Next to having a unique website, this is one of the most important things you can do to answer how to make your business standout. Offering unique services and products makes your business unique and gives clients a reason to choose you over your competition.  The only way to know which items are unique is to do market research.

Look at your top competition and see what they are offering. Don’t be afraid to really dig into their website and social media channels.  Once you have done your research then look to see what products are out there that are currently not offered that your clients would love.  One of the best ways we have found to see products up close and personal without buying them is conferences and trade shows like Imaging or Shutterfest for photographers. You can find a more in depth article about selecting products you can see here.

Expand the Services you Offer

This may be the most expensive and difficult suggestion we offer.  In order to find unique services you have to really dig into your own business. Find out what your clients want but you didn’t give them. Really get curious. Look at your market competition and see what services they offer. If what the client has low market competition, then this is a winner. Once you have this service in mind, you have to answer the difficult question: Can I do this?

You have to think about this service from all aspects including: cost of entry, training, equipment, and does it go with my brand. As you can see, this can get really expensive in the long run which makes this step difficult for some business owners. A good example is that years ago we wanted to get into more editorial work and handle low light situations we found ourselves in. We realized this was a huge issue among our brides and a lot of people in our market did not have a solution. We invested in training for off camera flash (J &M Lighting Course) and different lighting equipment (PROFOTO). This one service has allowed us to film Hollywood VIP clients and higher paying brides as they feel confident we can handle any situation.

Is this Worth It

This is really a hard question to answer as there are very few resources that actually address this issue. One of the best tools we use comes from market research group and it helps to answer that question. In order to see if this difference is worth establishing you have to meet one of the following criteria:

  • Valuable: the perceived benefit exceeds the cost
  • Important: delivers a benefit critical to success
  • Distinctive: unique or offered in a distinctive way
  • Superior: better technology, faster
  • Emotional: ties to a core emotion — love, hate, desire
  • Communicates: understood and visible
  • Preemptive: cannot be easily copied
  • Affordable: customers can pay the higher priceS
